Stone Mountain does not immediately come into view when you enter this park near the Blue Ridge Parkway in Wilkes and Allegheny Counties of North Carolina. The mountain is a 600 foot granite dome that is fairly easy to reach by the well marked trails. Additionally, this 14,000 acres contains 17 miles of trout waters that would be appealing to the most seasoned angler.
Mountain Laurel, rhododendron, grassy pastures, rolling hills, clear streams and granite mountains abound in this State Park and offer a variety of adventures for hikers, campers, fishermen and sightseers alike. Though bear may occasionally be in the area, they are not a common sight. You can however view small groups of deer throughout the park grazing on the abundant plant offerings.
If planning on camping, note that you will need to register with the Rangers on a first come basis.
Below are recent photos from our April 2018 visit to the mountain.
