So this was John AP Lane and one of the people responsible for my existence. Great grandfather x4. He was a Private in Company C of the North Carolina 17th Regiment. He ate his hard tac, salt pork, was scared, brave and honorable. And who knows what was really in his heart… I know he loved God. I know God gave him the opportunity to repent whatever sins were contained in his soul.

My GGGG GRANDFATHER was orphaned at age six and sold to Samuel Overton. He was personal property until after he fought in the war. Before the Civil War, slaves and indentured servants were considered personal property, and they or their descendants could be sold or inherited like any other property.

I do not celebrate the confederacy, the union or wish for any other outcome in 1865. As a matter of fact, given my moderate conservative views, I would have had a hard time being associated with anything other than the Northern States. I do however respect a Great War that, in the end, continued to set the timeline in which we all fought together in two great wars, international/regional wars and in defense of liberty for ours and other nations.

However, I will not move to support or find reason for those who destroy or degrade history because there are so many personal stories behind the big story.

I am bigger than this and realize our short history as a nation can not be destroyed, because the sum of all of its parts adds up to who we are today. A beautiful melting pot and a sea of lovely faces.

Note that Mr. Lincoln said a house divided against itself can not stand…. Another man, Rodney King, whose words we may have used as a funny catch phrase, “Can’t We All Get Along”, actually ring true and as noble as any famous philosophers quote.

All of the US is hallowed ground. I know that John A.P. Lane’s genes run through my veins… Those genes allow me to love all people regardless of who or what they are. You see, God created us all equal in his image.

“Do we not all have one father? Has not one God created us? Why do we deal treacherously each against his brother so as to profane the covenant of our fathers?”

Go hug or talk to someone. What are your true gifts from God that you can use to make our world a better place.
Hike your hike though life, Cheers!
